THE BEST STUDYING STRATEGIES FOR EXAMS
Studying at times is boring and non-excitatory so much that you don’t feel like learning or you don’t see a reason why you should study what you are studying. I know at times it might be challenging and tempting but there are strategies to make learning fun again even when exams are nearer than ever. Welcome to the best blog in Cameroon that focuses on Science education and career organization/orientation. Learn and don't forget to come back for more.
When I studied in high school, I noticed that the bulk of the materials I read was, covered in a month and I actually read faster when exams were to be written the next day or week because I had read the materials before. Not everyone is able to assemble ideas like this so it's important you know yourself and what works best for you but let's agree on one thing, you are not going to fail this year.
I found out that there are some things; you need to put into consideration. Depending on whether you are a fast learner or a slow learner.
At the end of the day I will like you to share with us the studying strategies you have been using and also tell us if it have been working for you.
IF YOU HAVE COVERED MUCH
If you have been studying and you have read more than 80% of the work then it is easy to move forward knowing that you have covered a greater majority of the work but you can do the following to boost their grades
1) Help others learn what you already know:
Explain an entire topic to a friend that have not read that topic yet. It is awesome to be a brother’s keeper and learning at the same time. When you explain to someone that knows, you get critics that you can use to perfect your work but the best way to know that you know is by explaining it to those that have not read. This is because you will start with the basics and move until the tail end without assumptions because you know that the person does not know a lot. You should be able to pass the message even if it means referring to a book. This brings out the innovative and analytic thinking of your brain to ensure that what you are giving is synchronous and at the same time learning
2.Answer past questions: The next thing you can do is to answer past questions and even answer questions of different countries. The mistake I made in high school was that I exercised less using question papers even though I knew the topics. This should have given me an upper hand towards handling better grades but I guess I learned my lessons late. Never you enter an exam hall without answering a few past questions
3) Revise: whenever you feel like you have forgotten a concept in a topic, don’t feel like you don’t know, instead go and revise that part, section or topic and remember that repetition is key.
IF YOU HAVE COVERED LESS
I know that feeling when your adrenaline is at 100% and the pressure is too much just because you don’t feel like you have read enough. There is no way to escape this feeling than to quench the satisfaction by reading to your satisfaction every day. If you feel pressurized take a walk or do sports for few minutes then return to your book. Set a target and work towards it.
For example, I never loved reading stuffs halfway so what I did is that I made sure anytime I seat to read, I am bent on reading one topic. It is not simple but it is achievable. I remember it took me close to 8 and 10 hours at times but I always end up finishing it. It is okay to take breaks between studies. If you feel like reading is not your thing then you can consider other alternatives such as:
1) Watching lecture videos online:
I remember when I had to pay 30 minutes in cyber cafe every Wednesday and Friday to download biology videos. Especially on the digestive system. I connected by keys to my TV set and watched it repeatedly until I was able to explain it to someone else.
Work using past questions: even though this was not my method but it still works fine for those that loved answering questions rather than reading. If you are to use this strategy, I recommend you use the internet, search for the topic you are answering questions on and have a broad overview of the topic maybe on Wikipedia or any other site. Then use google to explain questions that are challenging. This method can be rewarding just like any other method.
2) Use peer studies to achieve greater results: if you know that one person in your class that is always happy sharing his or her knowledge, you can buy lunch for that individual then ask them to explain a topic to you. It is better than giving up on you. If they could explain one topic a day to you, imagine how much you must have covered in two weeks.
Do not feel bad when it involves learning because nobody knew these things without studies and you are not going to let pride take care of your GCE for you. I just mentioned few strategies to tackle situations and not all could work for you. Go in for what works best for you and I will appreciate it if you comment below which strategy you have been using for studies and tell us if it has worked for you.
