NURSING IN CAMEROON

A brief weigh out between private and public nursing schools in Cameroon. 

If you’re interested in studying nursing in Cameroon, or you are choosing nursing as a second choice after medicine there are some things you need to understand so that you don’t spend a lot of money before realizing yourself at the end.

While many runaway from Nursing in public universities like the Faculty of Health Sciences, they turn to spend more in other private universities to learn the same thing. In as much as state universities offer a limited space and an entrance exam, their fee is quit moderate. 50 000 CFA F per year.

In the Faculty of Health science and in Cameroon in particular there is an average number of years of training to become a nurse, which is different from the number of years required to be a state registered nurse in Cameroon. Nursing studies in Cameroon has a duration of 4 years. Similar to other state universities whereas if you are intending to study in a private school, the number of years of study drops down to 2 to 3 years maximum with an average annual fee of 350 000 CFA F. 

After studying in a private school, you are, awarded an HND (Higher National Diplomat) and most will need to gain admission into a state university for an additional one year to get a Bachelor degree whereas those in state universities obtain a Bachelors of Nursing (BNS) on their graduation.

The part, which is advisable to take if you want to become a nurse in Cameroon, is to try writing a state entrance exam into their schools of which you can consider a private institution as an option. It is worth trying and often not regrettable. 

REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for nursing in the faculty of health sciences university of Buea is as follows:

ADVANCED LEVEL: Biology, Chemistry

ORDINARY LEVEL: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Math’s

Baccalaureate: C & D.

The grades are not take into consideration at the initial state but it is, considered as coefficient 1 during the grading of the students for the entrance exam. That means everyone has the probability of getting an admission once the required number of papers have been, met. 

N.B: the entrance exam written for Nursing is different from that written by Medicine and they are all written separately. Their results are independent too that makes you eligible to sit for both exams.
