If you want to study engineering in Cameroon, there are, several, things you have to consider before making your decision. Taking into consideration your money, your objectives, the type of engineering, language and many more.
Cameroon is privilege to have many departments in the field of engineering some of which are, listed below
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electronic engineering (software, hardware)
- Civil engineering
- Computer engineering
- Electrical engineering
- Geothermal engineering and even
- Mining
There are many more but these are the main types offered in universities in Cameroon. You have a list of then and you have the choice now.
Where best to study engineering
This question will be, answered based on several factors: if you have been studying in English and you don’t want to deviate from the English system maybe because you are afraid of paying to transcribe notes, then you can choose English-speaking universities. The University of Buea has two sectors if you are interested in studying engineering
- Faculty of engineering and technology FET (4 years)
- College of Technology COT (3 years)
The University of Bamenda in the year 2017 had the privilege to have Polytechnic Bamenda (5 years) in addition to College of Technology (COLTECH) Bamenda.
If you don’t mind studying in French, there are several options too. We have
- Polytechnic Yaoundé (5 years)
- Public works yaounde
- Public works Buea
- Polytechnic Douala
- ISSEA (for statisticians)
- ING
- FASA (agricultural engineering) and many more.
There are several state institutions and private institutions are, also numerous but I did not name them because some don’t qualify in my list of professional schools.
I’ll be answering questions I frequently get
What are the Qualification for engineering?
If you are interested in doing engineering in Cameroon and you are English inclined, for a state university you need to write an entrance exam that is more of Mathematics and Physics but some institutions can add general knowledge and Geology for mining. You therefore need to have advanced level mathematics and physics and a knowledge of further mathematics is of an added advantage. Those in the French sector will be, requested to write these exams using BAC C or any other requirement that will be, updated by the ministry of Higher Education with, regards to an institution.
Is a state university better than Private institutions?
My answer to this question stays and will remain yes until proven otherwise false. Very few Private professional schools in Cameroon are, qualified to be, called professional schools firstly because of the lack of an appropriate curriculum, lack of competent lecturers, and lack of seriousness by the institution.
Studying in a good professional school entails millions and the government have subsidized it to 50 thousands, and the state provides it’s Universities with top lecturers that have a good background in engineering.
Most professional schools take between 300 to 500 thousands CFA F per academic year and this money can’t really perform great things that’s why the best professional schools request for millions. An example of a good professional school is ISSEA and that’s why I listed it in my top professional schools in Cameroon.
To crown it all, state provides quality and they are cheaper.
Can I study Engineering without spending much?
I will say it depends on the type of engineering you will choose but in general, state universities like the University of Buea collect 50 thousands as fee.
